What is an NHS Health Check?
An NHS Health Check is a free health assessment designed to help prevent serious health conditions before they develop. It looks at your risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, and dementia.
The check is offered to adults aged 40 to 74 in England who do not already have a diagnosed long‑term condition. You will usually be invited for an NHS Health Check once every five years.
What does the NHS Health Check involve?
During your appointment, a healthcare professional will:
- Ask about your medical history and family history
- Measure your height, weight, and waist circumference
- Check your blood pressure
- Take a blood test to check your cholesterol (and sometimes blood sugar)
- Ask about your lifestyle, including diet, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol intake
Using this information, we calculate your risk of developing cardiovascular disease over the next 10 years.
What happens after the check?
Once your assessment is complete, we will:
- Explain your results clearly
- Discuss your individual health risks
- Offer personalised advice on how to improve your health
- Provide support such as lifestyle advice, referrals to local services, or treatment if needed
For many people, small changes to lifestyle can significantly reduce future health risks.
Why is the NHS Health Check important?
Many serious conditions develop silently, without obvious symptoms. An NHS Health Check helps to:
- Identify health problems early
- Reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes
- Support long‑term health and well being
- Help you stay healthier for longer
